Steps taken by State Election Commission brings transparency to voters' lists

PNS

Steps taken by the Uttarakhand State election commission in the past couple of years have enhanced transparency in the voters list while also preventing individual voters from being listed in the electoral roll of more than one Vidhan Sabha constituency. Not just at the state level, this should be implemented at the national level to register citizens on the electoral roll of only constituency area.  The Pradesh Congress Committee vice president Jot Singh Bisht said this while representing his party in the meeting held with Election Commission of India members in the chief secretary office here on Wednesday. Submitting the suggestions made by the party to the ECI, Bisht said that the Congress has complete trust in the ECI. He also said that the party appreciates the efforts being undertaken by the state chief electoral officer and state administration towards facilitation of transparent and fair elections. “During the past three-four years, the authorities have achieved considerable success in ensuring the listing of voters in electoral rolls of one area only. This is an important and concrete step taken towards the conducting of elections as required,” he said.  Bisht further pointed towards the difficult geographical conditions in the state where more than 22 of the total 70 assembly constituencies known to receive snowfall during the period from December to February.  “Many voters are at times unable to exercise their right to vote due to snowfall with the temperatures starting to rise in February. Considering these factors, the Vidhan Sabha election in Uttarakhand should be conducted in the last phase,” added Bisht.
