State Women's Commission wraths on Police over lukewarm reponse

State Women Commission vice- president Amrita lohani on Tuesday expressed outrage over the police’s delayed response to the dastardly crimes of dacoits raping two minors while holding other family members hostage when they were on a looting spree in a house at Ramnagar in Nainital district.

The crime occurred on early Sunday morning and the accused are still at large with the police remaining clueless regarding the identity of the criminals.

lohani met the survivors and their family members on Tuesday and said that she would seek an explanation from the State DGP over the police’s lackadaisical approach regarding such heinous crimes   committed on the minors. She alleged that the SSP had reached the house where the crime was committed a full day after of the incident occurred. “This reeks of the irresponsible mindset set deep in the district police,” she said.

She alleged that police had taken unusually long time in completing the medical tests of the gang rape survivors. This is what prompted her to intervene, she said.  She assured the survivors’ families that the commission would provide all the possible assistances to them to get justice over the issue.

lohani said that she had talked with SSP and SDM over the phone and asked them to take measures to arrest the offenders at the earliest.

Meanwhile, members of different social organisations and political parties staged protest over the issue and demanded the administration to have the criminals arrested promptly. The protesters warned that they would intensify their protest if the accused are not arrested soon.

lohani said that the matter being too sensitive, nobody should play politics over it. “The  crime is  of a rare   kind and all worried over the happening should act as  one man  to condemn it  and  to demand prompt arrest of the  perpetrators of the crime,” she said, adding that the commission would give compensation to the survivors after medical reports are received.

Echoing the common people’s sentiments, she said that the people of the region are scared.  “I admit that the police have failed to strike fear in the criminals. The criminals remaining at large despite two days having passed have accentuated the scare further. Police must effectively step in to restore confidence of the people,” she said.
