The alliance of Samajwadi Party with the Communist Party of India and CPI (Marxist) has failed to achieve its goal with all of its five candidates losing the polls for the five parliamentary segments in Uttarakhand. These parties have secured a total of about 30,000 votes in all the five lok Sabha seats of Uttarakhand.
In the 2009 Parliamentary election, SP had fielded two candidates — Amrish Kumar and PP Singh from Haridwar and Nainital constituencies respectively. Kumar had secured 34, 000 votes while Singh had got 32, 000 votes, informed SP State president Dr Satyanarayan Sachan. This time, the SP suffered a severe drubbing at the hands of voters in Uttarakhand. Despite tall claims of the party leaders about putting up a good performance, the SP, CPI and CPI (M) candidates were not even among top three candidates in State on the basis of votes polled.
Dr Sachan expressed disappointment at party’s performance in Uttarakhand. “We welcome the verdict of the voters but our party leaders would continue working for uniform system of issuing caste and domicile certificates to all the residents of Uttarakhand among other issues," he added.
Earlier, Dr Sachan had claimed that SP had made an alliance with CPI and CPI (M) to defeat Congress and prevent the BJP from coming to power by presenting themselves as the third alternative. This alignment was based on the principle of alignment of 11 parties including JDU, SP, left parties and others at national-level to prevent Congress and BJP from coming to power by presenting themselves as an alternative.
As per the alliance, SP had fielded its candidates from three seats in Uttarakhand, while the CPI and CPI (M) had fielded a candidate each.SP had fielded Anita Saini from Haridwar parliamentary constituency, Avtar Singh from Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar and Bhagwati Prasad Trikoti from Almora constituency. All the SP candidates polled a meager number of votes and forfeited their individual election deposits of Rs5,000.
In Haridwar constituency, the party candidate Anita Saini managed to secure only 5,765 votes, Avtar Singh polled only 9,825 votes in Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar constituency and Bhagwati Prasad Trikoti got only 1,851 votes in Almora constituency. The CPI candidate Narendra Singh Negi secured 6,525 votes in Pauri constituency while CPI (M) candidate Shiv Prasad Devli polled only 6,577 votes in the Tehri constituency.
