SP, BSP unlikely to contest Vidhan Sabha by-election

After debacle in the recently concluded parliamentary elections in Uttarakhand, the Samajwadi Party (SP) seems to be in no mood to contest Vidhan Sabha bypoll from any of the three constituencies — Doiwala, Someshwar and Dharchula. However, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is uncertain as to whether it will contest the Assembly bypolls.

SP State president Satyanarayan Sachan said that Congress-led State Government is not stable as its leaders are fighting among themselves. Under such circumstances, State is likely to see mid-term poll for Vidhan Sabha in November this year or early next year.

If you analyse the two years of Congress-led State Government then you will find that both the Chief Ministers- Vijay Bahuguna and Harish Rawat were concentrating on protecting their position rather than laying emphasis on addressing people’s concerns in the State.”

Sachan further said that party office bearers held a meeting at the State party office and decided against fielding any candidate in the assembly bypoll for three Vidhan Sabha constituencies.

“Instead of contesting assembly by-poll, we have decided to strengthen the organisation at grass root level in the State and work for the next Assembly elections in the State,” he added.

According to him, though, party had entered an alliance in Uttarakhand with Communist Party of India (CPI) and CPI (M) in the recently concluded parliamentary elections, the party candidates fielded from Haridwar, Nainital and Almora lost the election by huge margins. Sachan said that the party is presently concentrating on strengthening its organisational structure in the state.

The BSP State in charge Suraj Mal said, “The party did not perform well in the recently concluded lok Sabha election with our candidates losing in all the five parliamentary seats in Uttarakhand. Party leaders and workers are concentrating on strengthening the organisation at grassroot level and are gearing up for the next assembly elections in the State. Regarding the assembly bypolls, the party has not yet decided whether to field its candidates or not,” he said.
