Kapil Chand, a student of Class XI of the Government inter collge, Kamleshwar, Pithoragarh, will participate in the Sakura Exchange programme in Japan from May 9 to 16 under the INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) programme. UCOST spokesman Amit Pokhriyal said that to facilitate sharing of experiences of schoolchildren from Asian countries while inculcating scientific temperament and innovativeness, the Japanese Government had initiated this programme in 2014.
Kapil Chand is among the 30 selected students from India who are going to visit Japan. Earlier in 2013, Kapil Chand was selected in the national INSPIRE award for his novel model on hydraulic bridge. He won the first position for the State during the national science exhibition and competition (2013) organised by the Department of Science & Technology under the INSPIRE programme.
According to experts, Kapil’s concept of hydraulic bridge will be quite useful during the times of calamities and disaster. Kapil states that the hydraulic bridge has the capability to increase or decrease its height according to the level of the water in the river enabling it to remain damage-proof. When the water will rise in the river, then due to the hydraulic pressure, water will percolate in the bottom of the pillars thereby increasing the bridge’s height. later, when the water recedes, the bridge will automatically return to its original position.
