The Slum Photo Fest (SPF) - an all India photography festival aimed at democratising photography across the country and bridge the creative gap between the slum communities and Indian society at large will start in Dehradun on Friday.

According to the event organisers, the photo fest will have the work of more than 50 photographers from over 30 different countries, at five slum neighborhoods in and around Dehradun. Starting on Friday, the fest will have digital exhibitions showcased as free slideshow projections in slum neighborhoods.

Festival director Manik Katyal says, “We want photography that is for the people regardless of their background or economic status. The message we want to give is that the fact you have been born in a slum does not necessarily mean that this is the end of your story- we strongly believe that you can change your story.

Slum Photo Fest will present world-class photography in public locations, to inform, educate, ecourage and most importantly, entertain, wishing to broaden the visual perspective and push the boundaries of personal development of the masses,” he said.

Katyal further informed that a range of work focused on social aspects of education, gender, identity, conflict, human rights, health, environment and culture will be displayed as part of the photo fest.
