Due to the callous attitude of the State Power Department and considerably recognised gap between the demand and supply of the electricity in the State, several localities in the capital city witnessed power outage on Thursday.

After blaming the local faults for the power cuts in the concerned localities, the department has been following the strict scheduled load shedding for upto four hours in the cities.

Department sources revealed that the supply of electricity was disrupted due after fault was occurred on PTCUl Majjra-Rishikesh 132 KV line. Due to the fault, the supply of electricity was reported to be disrupted in the capital city. Besides, the power generation in the Chibbro and Khodri hydro power projects was stopped for nearly five hours.

Officials lamented that the power generation has been badly affected due to the silt in the Himalayan rivers and its tributaries. The plight of the residents has also increased several times as apart from the scheduled power cut of one-and-a-half hour in the rural sector of Haridwar district, and two hours of compulsory power cuts in the rural areas of Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand, the power cuts were observed for nearly four hours in the region.

The State is facing the shortage of three to four million units of electricity on a daily basis. One of the department sources who wished anonymity told The Pioneer that the faults have been occurring due to the stormy weather conditions across the State. He said that the tripping of lines due to the inclement weather is a regular feature in order to avoid any damage to the electrical equipments.

He told that instructions have been released to the lineman and engineers on the regular intervals for providing the round the clock power to the consumers except during the scheduled maintenance work, which is regular feature in the department.
