Setback to GDMC: One more faculty leaves

Gajendra Singh Negi

In yet another setback to the nascent Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), one more faculty member, Dr Nidhi Uniyal, left the college on Friday. Dr Uniyal was Assistant Professor of Medicine in the college and was discharging the duties of Head of Department (HOD) of Medicine of the new college.

On Friday Dr Uniyal handed over her resignation to the Principal of the college, Dr Pradip Bharati Gupta.

Incidentally the department of medicine is worst affected by the disillusion that seems to have set in among the newly recruited faculty members.

Earlier Associate Professor, Dr Vikram Singh and assistant Professor Dr Sanjay Kumar Varun had left their jobs.

The Principal Dr Gupta told The Pioneer that Dr Uniyal has cited personal reasons for her resignation.

When contacted, Dr Uniyal said that the mismanagement in the hospital and avoidable workload compelled her to resign.

It is learnt that some more faculty members are contemplating resignation. Consistent delays in salaries, utter chaos in hospital, improper distribution of work and undue political pressure are the issues which are irking the newly appointed doctors.

The medical college at present is having two types of doctors, the contractual faculty members and those drawn from the Provincial Medical Services (PMS).

The other problem these contractual Professors, Associate and Assistant Professors are facing is the virtual contempt they are treated with by their colleagues drawn from the Provincial Medical Services.

“It is unfortunate that the faculty members have started leaving the medical college even before all the admissions for first batch of students could get completed. Government should look into the issue. There is no coordination among the top officials and there is an open animosity between the Principal and Medical Superintendent (MS) which is proving detrimental to the nascent college,’’ said one of a staff members.
