Amid the ongoing political turmoil, the administration has strengthened security of the elected MlAs in the State. A senior police officer said that MlAs are already secure with a gunner for each. Besides, police have deployed around half a section of PAC jawans to provide security for the MlAs of the State.
He, however, said that all residents being equal before the law, those who require extra security beyond what they were being provided with must apply for the same.
However, SSP Dr Sadanand Date refused to say anything over the matter. Sources said that some MlAs from BJP and Congress have sought extra security from police, citing the threat perception they are smarting under. They are said to have told the cops that they are receiving threat phone calls over phone.
Notably, some of the MlAs from both the parties refused to have police forces deployed at their residences. However, additional police forces have been deputed at MlA Transit hostel, Race Course by the administration.
Rajpur Road MlA Rajkumar said, “Some policemen had come to my house on Monday. They overviewed the security. However, I have not sought police security.”
With things charging up with the Governor having fixed March 28 for the floor test of the Harish Rawat government, police are not ruling out possibility of the MlAs being threatened.
Intelligence and income tax department officers are vigilant too to stop any bid of horse-trading. It is learnt that the income tax department officers from Delhi and Kanpur keep roaming around the State. Offices of some businessmen dealing with liquor, mining and others have been raided too.
