Haridwar police has revoked section 144 of CrPC in Roorkee and imposed it in Bhagwanpur area along with deployment of additional security force for the third day on Tuesday following communal tension that erupted after a 30 year man and 28 year old woman belonging to different communities got married with the family members of the bride opposing the marriage.

Roorkee sub-divisional magistrate Pratyush Singh said that situation in the Bhagwanpur area is under control but as precautionary measure, section 144 of CrPC has been imposed here. Police have been put on alert and additional forces have been deployed in Bhagwanpur area, he added. Police sources said that the situation in Bhagwanpur is tense but under control.

The district administration held a meeting on Tuesday with the members of various political parties and public groups including BJP, Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena and members of Gujjar community at Roorkee and tried to resolve this issue. The members of Gujjar community said that they would organise mahapanchayat on January 10 at Salimpur (Saharanpur- Uttar Pradesh) if administration fails to handover the married woman to her family by January 9.

Garhwal Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Amit Sinha reached Haridwar and took stock of the situation there. He has directed the police officers to deploy additional force and ensure action is taken against persons violating the law.

It may be mentioned here that a man and woman who married six months ago were running their own private educational institutes at Roorkee and Bhagwanpur in Haridwar district. Tension erupted when families of both the man and woman accused each other for the situation and local political leaders planned to organise a mahapanchayat over this issue.
