Taking cognisance of one of the reasons that likely led to the alleged suicide by a girl inmate of Balika Niketan in Dehradun recently, the chairperson of State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), Usha Negi is planning to write to the Punjab SCPCR seeking the custody of the siblings of the girl.

After officials talked to the other inmates in Balika Niketan it came to light that the inmate who committed suicide had also expressed concern for her siblings. She had shared that her father may remarry and not care about her siblings.

Negi said, “We tried to contact the father of the girl who switched his phone off. This left us with option but to perform her cremation.

We still do not know whether the father has remarried or not. We have lost contact with the father. We will be sending a letter to the Punjab SCPCR for inquiry as he is living there.

If the commission will find that the father is unable to take care of children then the Punjab SCPCR or Uttarakhand SCPCR will seek for custody of the children.”It will be recalled that the girl who had allegedly committed suicide in Dehradun was accused of killing her mother and had been sent by the court to Balika Niketan.
