Residents spend sleepless nights amid all-round destruction

PNS

I spent three sleepless nights since Saturday for fear of drowning along with family members in the river as my home is situated in the bank of Rispana river,” said Sitara, resident of Navada Bengali Basti on Thursday.

In her locality, the water supplied by the department has been muddy or contaminated during the last three days. Roads of the locality were damaged but not a single department official reached here,” she added. Defence Colony councillor Sushil Kumar said that the rain and flooding is estimated to have caused damage worth Rs 5 crore.

Though there was no loss of her personal property in three days of incessant rain followed by a flood in the Rispana, Sitara spent three sleepless nights along with dozens of neighbours living along the river bank. Roads have been damaged in the area though not yet inspected by any official.

Another resident of Kedarpuram wanting to remain anonymous said that years ago there were no buildings along the river bank but in recent years the number of such illegal constructions had increased drastically with the government not taking any action against this development.

Kedarpuram resident Bhushan said that water is supplied twice a day but the intensity of water flow is low. Due to this, residents have been experiencing inadequate water supply. The Deference Colony councillor said that he had earlier told the local (former and sitting) MlAs to construct several safety walls along river bank to mitigate damage but they turned a deaf ear. Due to their negligence, residents suffered damages to property estimated to cost about Rs 5 crore.

According to him, the previous State government had made safety walls in those places where there were no population. In absence of safety walls, the building of Sanatam Dharma Shiv temple, MDDA colony, Kedarpuram was damaged.

Navada Pradhan Jagmohan Gurung said that boundary walls of around 12 homes and many safety walls had collapsed due to incessant rain and flooding. According to Gurung, he and the lekhpal are evaluating the loss of property in the area.
