Reservation for women irks men vying for civic body post

Pradeep Bhandari

Men, hoping to contest for the post of the Joshimath municipal board president, are disappointed with the seat being reserved for a woman. However, the women are happy with this development and have started presenting their candidature to their respective parties.

With the Joshimath municipal board chairperson’s seat being reserved for a woman candidate, ticket hopefuls have begun their efforts to secure a ticket from the party to contest the election while those planning to contest as independents have started working to secure public support. Though no party has yet declared the list of its candidates, the list of women candidates hoping for a ticket has increased. The Joshimath local body was accorded the status of municipal board in 1982-83. In 2003, Madhavi Sati of Congress was elected the municipal board chairperson after which in the following elections, Rishi Prasad Sati of the BJP won election to the post.

There were many male ticket hopefuls in both the parties this year but their hopes were quashed when the seat was reserved for a woman candidate. Following this development, the names of former municipal board chairperson Madhavi Sati of the Congress and Rohini Rawat of the BJP are heading the list of ticket hopefuls.
