Chief Minister Harish Rawat said that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had contributed to the development of modern India. The CM said this while speaking at a function held at Rajiv Bhawan in Dehradun to mark the death anniversary of the former PM on Wednesday.

Addressing the gathering of party workers, the chief minister called Rajiv Gandhi an able administrator and far sighted politician who had given a new direction to the nation. “He played a crucial role in revolutionary works in the field on information technology and contributed to facilitating the execution of development schemes in the rural areas by empowering the Panchayats,” said the Chief Minister.

The Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president and cabinet minister Yashpal Arya said that the former PM had a simple heart and strong determination. Referring to the rout suffered by the Congress across India including Uttarakhand in the lok Sabha elections, the PCC chief said, “The Congress has been defeated but we are not shaken by this. We will struggle again and win,” said Arya, while also requesting the party cadre to move ahead with control and discretion in the time of defeat. Various elected public representatives, Congress leaders and workers were among those present on the occasion.
