The court sent a rape accused Nadeem Akhtar (21 years) on 14-day judicial custody under some sections of Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act on Monday after police produced him before the court. Akhtar had been arrested after he was charged with raping a four-year-old girl. The arrest had followed ruckus created by the angry people outside the Pauri police station.
The alleged crime being given a communal colour, some Hindu organisations staged a demonstration in the town on Monday. The shops were shut down by the agitators. They said police must verify the antecedents of the outsiders settling in the town thoroughly.
The alleged survivor of the crime is a Nepalese. The mother of the girl had lodged the complaint at the police station on Sunday. According to her, the crime was committed on Saturday night. As the SHO was out of the station the sub inspector refused to lodge the report.
However, after the people vented out anger outside the police station a case against the accused was registered in the night and the medical examination of the alleged victim was conducted.
