Rains threaten encroachers on river banks

PNS
The incessant rains experienced in Dehradun have elicited focus on the encroachments abetted by politicians in sensitive areas like the beds and banks of the Rispana and Bindal rivers. The district administration did provide temporary relief to those living in these areas by shifting them to safe locations, but those living on the banks of the these rivers will continue to face danger from flooding every year till concrete measures are taken to address factors, including the increasing encroachment in these areas. Encroachments on the river banks not only affect the course of the river, but also endanger the lives of the encroachers during the rainy season. lack of proper garbage disposal and criminal activities in such settlements affect not only the encroachers, but also those living in neighouring legal settlements. On Sunday, the district administration had shifted the people at risk in the Bindal area to the nearby Janpath complex, but they had returned to their homes on Monday morning when this correspondent visited the site. locals point out that those who have encroached have been provided ration cards, electricity and water connections due to the involvement of politicians looking to develop vote banks. A local, Anuj Gupta, said, "The Government and politicians seem to focus only on vote banks. We have to face many problems due to encroachers, but if we complain, heated arguments follow and at times they also damage our property.” He further adds, “The Rajpur Road MlA visited the complex on Sunday and got a few photos clicked while distributing food to those taking shelter, but the next day the place was a mess as the people had defecated here and littered the place,” he said. A shopkeeper on condition of anonymity said, "The whole complex seems to be a dump yard and only we know how we are dealing with this. The authorities should rehabilitate the encroachers after verfication by the police and we should be paid for the use of the complex," he said. The District Magistrate BVRC Purushottam said that the main focus is to safely temporarily relocate those at risk. He said, "Sweepers will be sent to the complex for cleaning though at present disaster management is on top of my priorities. I have the responsibility of saving lives right now but the rehabilitation matter will also be looked into. The complex administration should come forward for a good cause and to expect money in return is wrong. Fifty people who were shifted from the Rispana river banks have been sheltered in the THDC building in Kedarpuram," he added.
