Rain plunges Dehradun into darkness

PNS

Heavy rainfall in Dehradun and other parts of the State since Saturday night triggered massive power-cuts dragging for  eight to ten hours at a stretch in many places  across the state.  Such long spells  of power-cuts were attributed to technical snags developing in the state- based hydro project projects.  Many localities in the state capital were left without power throughout  Sunday night. Things remained erratic even on Monday morning. Moreover, power outage disrupted supply of potable water in several areas in the city. Power supply resumed around Monday noon in most of the localities thus affected.  Things in the districts are no better with the people grappling with protracted spells of power-cuts.

Some hydropower projects, including Chhibro and Khodri and Dalipur and Dakrani, had stopped generating electricity for a few hours on Sunday noon, resulting in a shortfall of  around 5 MU. Power generation resumed by late Sunday  night.Officials said silt in the Himalayan rivers and their tributaries had  led to the non-functioning of turbines at the hydro power projects and the resultant disruption in electricity generation. An Uttarakhand Power Corporation limited (UPCl) official said that power supply at Srinagar was adversely affected following 132 KV Rishikesh- Srinagar line of PITCUl having broken down between Rishikesh and Shivpuri at Brahampuri. UPCl is providing need based power supply to Srinagar from 132 KV Kotdwar-Satpuli line.

Along with  the executive engineers, Power Transmission Corporation of Uttarakhand limited (PTCUl) and UPCl managing director SS Yadav has been camping at Brahampur and power officers have been directed to restore power supply at the earliest.Among the worst affected localities in Dehradun were Salawala, Vikaslok, Shiv lok Colony, Rajpur, Subhash Road, Nehru Colony, Harrawala, Jogiwala, Raipur and Sahastradhara crossing. Dehradun received 83.7 mm rainfall on Sunday.
