Punjab State Yuva Congress president Manendar Singh died in a road accident at Sahaspur in Dehradun on Friday. Another person too died in another accident under the same Sahaspur police station limit.

Singh was seriously injured as the car he was in rammed into a pile of bricks at Dhamawala Chowk on Friday. Police reached the spot after being informed and Singh was rushed to a Vikasnagar- based hospital where he died later. The family members of the deceased were informed about the incident, police said.

In another accident, a person died after the two-wheeler he was riding was knocked by another two-wheeler speeding from the opposite direction late Thursday evening. The deceased was identified as Pardesh, a Nepal national who was living in Banjara Basti, Selaqui, Sahaspur. Pradesh was seriously injured and was rushed to Doon Hospital where he breathed his last on Friday.

Accidents happening in a row, a school- going student died when the two-wheeler he was on was hit by a vehicle coming from opposite direction on Curzon Road on Wednesday. His vehicle was reported to have fallen after it was entangled in telephone cables spread along the road side. The family members of the deceased   protested and blamed the administration for the telephone cables spread along the roadside.

Though Dehradun administration has claimed to have taken several measures to check road accidents, number of such mishaps is spiralling fast in the state capital and other parts of the district.

Several reasons like over-speeding, rash driving, triple riding and drunk driving aside from the grimly deplorable conditions of the roads are spawning the rising number of accidents. Under-age riding is another reason.

“Roads are dug up and they take hell of time to have them duly filled up. Besides, craters gape right on the roads, resembling death holes. Add to this rash driving, drunk driving and underage driving, the grim picture of the vulnerability of the common people’s life on the roads is complete,” said Kamal Bisht, resident of Raipur.
