With police grappling with rising numbers of complaints related to atrocities on women, the State police have sent proposals to the State administration to clear the decks for setting up of two more all-women police stations in Haldwani and Haridwar districts. Presently, there are two such police stations in the state, one at Almora and the other at Srinagar in Pauri district. Sources say that Haldwani and Haridwar districts being considered as vulnerable to crimes against women, the state police top brass has decided to go for such police stations to enable the oppressed women to show courage to lodge complaints.
Informing about the police proposal, SP (headquarters) Nivedita Kukreti said on Friday that the initiative if given nod by the administration would go a long way in freeing the women from the fear of lodging complaints regarding the atrocities they are being subjected to.
Recently, DGP MA Ganapathy stressed on appointing at least one woman sub-inspector or inspector as the police station in-charge or police post in-charge.
However, sources say that the directive is unlikely to be executed in full, given the reluctance of the women sub-inspectors to take charge of the police stations.
