PNS

A programme was held at the Doon library and Research Centre on the grand old lady of Indian cinema Zohra Sehgal who expired recently. Not many people know that Zohra Sehgal worked as a choreographer in films. Baazi, Guru Dutt's debut film were choreographed by her. The songs were “Tadbeer se bigdi huee taqdeer bana le” and “Suno gajar kya gaaye”, a very elaborate dance sequence. Awaara's elaborate dream sequence, ‘Ghar aaya mera pardesi’ was also choreographed by her. These songs were shown at DlRC while library member Hina Gossain read out portions from Sehgal’s autobiography. One portion was her narration of how she informed her father of her decision to marry Kameshwar who was younger to her and belonged to a different religion. She came from Almora to Dehradun where her father had a house in Majra. The other portion was the establishment of Uday Shankar's dance academy at Almora. She along with Uday Shankar had selected the site for the academy and built a temporary structure over there. The highlight of the afternoon was Vinita Shetty, a Doon resident sharing her experiences with Zohra Sehgal in Delhi during 1995.
