The tall claims made by the State power department that no power cut would be implemented during the festive season proved bogus as several areas of the State capital witnessed power cut on Sunday during Diwali celebrations.

Although the State power department carried maintenance works ahead of Diwali but several colonies witnessed power cut and those who are living in the fringe parts of the State are among the worst sufferers due to the frequent power cuts.

However, department officials claimed that the additional manpower was deployed for rectifying the errors during the festival season.

After realizing the fact the State run turbines are insufficient to meet with the growing demands of electricity in the State, State power department has decided to procure electricity from the private electricity players.

Unable to cope up with the demand of electricity that hover around 30 million units, the State power department has been continuously procuring electricity from the private electricity generators to meet with the demand of the electricity in the State.

Among the worst affected districts in terms of power cut are Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar districts and smaller towns of the State.

However, the technical snags that were reported on Sunday was also rectified by the department employees except to those colonies where testing of lines continued till late in the evening.

One of the department sources who wished anonymity told The Pioneer that few private electricity generators have concurred to sell electricity to the State during its lean time.

He said that the department will keep an eye on the demand of the electricity in the State and will follow the scheduled power cut in case of emergency only.
