The Income-Tax department has set a collection target of `11,500 crore in the State for the current year, which is about 16 per cent more than in the previous year. After the department starts demonetisation data mining, there might be drastic changes in the State by March 2018 with the department planning to identify about 100 to 200 cases of gross income tax evasion, said the State’s Chief Commissioner of Income-Tax Pramod Kumar Gupta here on Tuesday.

Talking to media persons, ahead of the first anniversary of the introduction of demonetisation in the country, the Chief Commissioner of Income-Tax said that post demonetisation there had been an increase in the number of returns filed. There is a direct correlation between demonetisation and the number of income tax assessees.

He said, “In Uttarakhand there are about 5.27 lakh assessees with there being an increase of about 2,000 in their number following the demonetisation introduced by the Government of India. As the Chief Commissioner of Income-Tax, I am committed to the ushering in of a non-adversarial income tax regime. This year, the department’s collection target in the state is `11,500 crore which is about 16 per cent more than the `84,900 crore figure of the previous year. Further, once we start demonetisation data mining, we plan to identify 100-200 cases of gross evasion of taxes and take necessary action by the month of March,” he added.
