Taking cognizance of the directives issued by Supreme Court- constituted monitoring committee, Dehradun police has decided to suspend the licences of vehicle drivers for three months if they are caught violating traffic rules while indulging in  rash driving, drunk driving, red light jumping, overloading and using mobile phone while driving.   The directives will be enforced from Monday strictly, police said.

Observers say the directives are justified in view of the fact that the above-mentioned factors contribute to most of the mishaps taking tolls of lives in the State.

Taking note of this, Dehradun SP Traffic PK Rai said on Thursday that Supreme Court- constituted monitoring committee has strictly directed the states to implement the above instructions to check accidents.

Earlier, traffic police or transport officials used to impose challans under Motor Vehicle (MV) Act on the violators. Now, police would seize the license of the errant divers and challan report will be sent to Regional Transport office for further action. As per the directives, RTO officials would suspend the license for three months.

SP Traffic PK Rai said that Supreme Court’s directives will be implemented strictly in the state capital. He appealed to the people to abide by the traffic rules to avoid stringent actions being taken against them.

The directives also stressed on creating awareness on the imperative of using the seat belts by the drivers. The administration would launch special campaign regarding the same, police said.

Observes opine that rising number  of accidents scaring the people of the State, the stringent measures contained  in the directives would rein in the errant drivers who are taking lives with impunity.
