The new Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is very keen on development of scientific research in the country, said Dr R Chidambaram while talking to The Pioneer at the sidelines of the bridge inauguration programme at HESCO village. Dr Chidambaram evaded the question about as to who among the former Prime Minister (PM) Manmohan Singh and present PM is more focused on scientific research but he said that the commitment of Modi can be gauged from the fact that he made it a point to visit the launching of Polar Satellite launch Vehicle (PSlV)-C 23 and INS Vikramaditya; it shows his concern for science. He said that the government of India has setup Rural Technology Action Groups (RuTAGs) for effective need based technology delivery in rural areas. Chidambaram said that he firmly believes that the technology should be used to develop the rural areas of the country. “I believe that the quality of life in rural areas would be improved when we are able to take them at par with the life of countryside in western counties” he said. The premier scientist was of the view that the rural India can benefit by the concept of Gandhian Economics in which the technology uses locally produced materials to enhance the quality of life.
