District Magistrate of Pauri, Sushil Kumar stressed on voluntary services rendered to the victims of natural calamities while chairing a function organised to mark the World Red Cross Day in Pauri on Tuesday. He said that if some people volunteer to serve the people rendered destitute by the natural calamities it would prove inspirational for others.

Addressing a gathering of students and those studying in medical institutions, the DM said that the Red Cross Society had come up  190 years ago sans any  financial resources. “Now we can see how the organisation is reaching out to the sick, the disabled and others in every nook and corner of the world with its medical assistance,” he said. Hailing Red Cross Society for its role in India, he said that its service network is spread out across the country. “They are serving the distressed people wherever they are. This is what is making people to provide it with generous donations,” he said.

Kumar said that the membership strength of the Red Cross Society and its affiliated organisations should be sufficiently increased and training should be imparted to the volunteers who are taking up medical services. “This would ensure that medical services reach the people in maximum number,” he added.

On the occasion of the Red Cross Day, 15 units of blood have been donated by 13 donors. Besides, DM presented mementos to those who finished first, second and third in the speech competition held on the occasion based on the subject ‘Red Cross in Uttarakhand’.

Additional chief medical officer H C S Martoliya  gave a brief  account of the activities of Red Cross Society while the life time member Dr O P Bhatt  stressed on more and more blood donation camps being organised to tide over the blood scarcity plaguing the state-run medical facilities.

Among others, the additional director primary education S P Khali and  the district manager Red Cross Society Keshar Singh Aswal were present.
