Open garbage affecting public health, officials unmoved

PNS

The three market areas here and Nagla area in the GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT) campus are littered with garbage not disposed properly by the authorities and encroachments. The unhygienic conditions created by the improperly dumped garbage have been exacerbated by the rains. This situation is posing a public health risk but the authorities concerned are apathetic to the filth and encroachments.

Most of the shopkeepers in the two markets located in the main campus have encroached on the land in front of their shops and on the park land. The encroachment is posing problems for the shoppers.

The market building is about 60 years old due to which the ceiling starts to leak even after light rains and this in turn converts the market into a giant puddle after rains. The condition of these markets has deteriorated due to the fact that there were officiating vice chancellors in the university in the past two years.

The shopkeepers have placed their wares on the space in front of their shops. The market park is being used by the shopkeepers to place a generator and as a parking space for vehicles. The toilet in the main market is also in a dilapidated condition as it has not been repaired for the last many years.

These problems are causing severe inconvenience to the shoppers. The university administration appears to be incapable of resolving the problem by ensuring proper garbage disposal and removal of encroachments. Some locals also fear that the failure of the administration to facilitate the repair of the dilapidated market building has increased risk to the public in case of a mishap.

According to the Nagar Vyapar Mandal chairman and local BJP leader Vivek Saksena, the university administration increases the rent for shops and electricity charge rates every year but is not paying any attention to the need for repairs, sanitation and other works in the market.

This has increased the level of dissatisfaction among the shopkeepers and the people living in the university campus.
