Transport officers from different parts of the State participated in a meeting in the Regional Transport Office  (RTO) on Wednesday and discussed the online process for vehicle registration.

Enthused by the success of the Dehradun RTO where this initiative was started as a pilot project, the State Government had recently decided that all the offices of the State would soon start online registration of the vehicles.

The Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) of Dehradun, Sandeep Saini said that the project was started in Dehradun on August 14 this year. He said that more than 11,000 vehicles were registered on line in the office since its start.

Saini said that the officers of different transport offices of the State learned the intricacies of the project so that they could implement it in their offices. The department is planning to introduce online registration of vehicles in a phased manner.

In the first phase private vehicles are being given this facility. Under the project the automobile dealers can register sold vehicle with the transport department online and are thus prevented the ordeal of visiting the RTO office.

Incidentally Dehradun was the first district in the country where this facility was made available. It is learnt that the government is also planning to register all commercial vehicles online which would benefit people. The plan of the department is to make the online payment of taxes of commercial vehicle to bring relief to the drivers of commercial vehicles. The procedure apart from saving time is expected to reduce corruption considerably in the offices of transport department.
