Demanding stern action against those responsible for the suicide of Dalit student Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) here has dispatched a letter to the President of India. A delegation of NSUI met the district magistrate of Dehradun on Wednesday and handed over a memorandum.
In the memorandum, NSUI has expressed shock over the death of dalit student and demanded that a law should be made which ensures that the universities become free from political pressure. In the memo the student organisation has stated that the circumstances in which the student Vemula was forced to end his life should be investigated thoroughly. The scholarship of Veluma was stopped from last few years. In the memorandum, the NSUI leaders have alleged that the Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya was so much frightened by the influence of Vemula that he wrote a letter to the Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani asking her to force the university to expel the student along with four others. The NSUI leaders have also expressed deep concern over the manner in which the university administration melted under political pressure. The memorandum was handed over by NSUI leaders Swati Negi, Saurabh Mamgain, Vikas Kashyap, Navdeep Negi and others.
