The State Government has formed a three-member committee under the chairmanship of the additional advocate general to make all possible attempt to ensure punishment to those guilty of committing atrocities on Uttarakhand Statehood activists at Rampur intersection, Mussoorie, Khatima and other places during the Statehood movement.

The Statehood activists will be honoured on the State foundation day on November 9.The CM said this after paying tributes to the Statehood martyrs at the memorial in Rampur, Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh) on the anniversary of the Rampur firing incident.Remembering the Statehood activists on the occasion, the CM said that 20 years ago on the birth anniversary of a great worshipper of non-violence, non-violent protesters were meted out barbaric treatment.

He exhorted the gathering to commit themselves to stand up against atrocity. The State of Uttarakhand was created not as a result of a movement against anyone but with the expectation of entering the mainstream of development.Followers of different religious from the plains and mountainous regions participated enthusiastically in this movement. Those agitating for creation of Uttarakhand State had dreamt of an ideal State. When Uttar Pradesh was undivided, the region which now constitutes Uttarakhand had also contributed to various achievements of the State.

“During the firing at Muzaffarnagar, the locals came to the rescue of the protesters and helped save many of them. Muzaffarnagar is the land of communal harmony so we should all commit ourselves to erase negative feelings. The dream of a clean India can be fulfilled only when people also clean up their minds. We should commit ourselves to ensuring that feelings of division and hatred will not come between people,” said the CM on the occasion.

The Uttarakhand Rajya Andolankari Samman Parishad vice chairman Dhirendra Pratap and Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Kishore Upadhyaya also expressed their views on the occasion. After paying tribute to those who had died in the firing incident at Rampur intersection during the Statehood movement, the CM also visited the nearby museum.
