Under pressure following the recent surrender of the suspected Hizbul Mujahideen militant Danish Ahmed who is a third-year B.Sc student of Dehradun-based Doon PG College of Agriculture, Science and Technology - at Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir, the state police brass said that the verification of the migrants to the state remain incomplete because of the non-cooperation from their counterparts from the states the migrants are from. “We regularly conduct the verification drives involving the migrants. Documents related to their antecedents are being collected from them too. But the verification procedure is not completed as the police from the states they are from do not give us the information about them. This is a serious matter, given the case of Danish having come to the fore,” said a senior state police officer while asking for anonymity.
As per the statistics released by the Dehradun police, over the past five months, relevant information and documents related to the migrants were collected from 745 persons in January, 779 persons in February, 1524 persons in March, 2781 persons in April and 3965 persons in May. Collected reports were sent to the states concerned for further verification of the persons concerned. Report revealed that 2615 such documents were sent to Uttar Pradesh, 580 to Jammu and Kashmir, 393 to Bihar, 24 to Jharkhand, 46 to Rajasthan 52 to Himachal Pradesh, 46 to Madhya Pradesh, 126 to Haryana, 105 to Punjab, 105 to Andhra Pradesh, 24 to Gujarat and 22 to Chhattisgarh.
While expressing her anguish over the matter, Dehradun senior superintendent of police Nivedita Kukreti said on Sunday that she herself would take initiatives to communicate to the police brass based in the state’s police headquarters, requesting them to see to it that the police from the states being approached send their confirmation of the verification reports sent from the state in time.
“Besides, police station officers have been directed to send reminders to the state concerned about the verification of the antecedents of the migrants,” she said.
She further said that the police stations have been allocated around a section of PAC jawans to conduct verification drives in those areas where the migrants are mostly living. On Sunday, verification drive was conducted in Rajpur, Raipur, Patelnagar, Premnagar and Kotwali areas, police claimed.
Critics opine that the verification process of the migrants remaining incomplete, the state capital has become a refuge for the terrorists and criminals. “There are many cases in the recent times when the criminals were arrested after they spent a good many years here in disguise. Things are really alarming,” one of them says.
The recent surrender of the suspected member of the militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen Danish Ahmed- a third-year student of B.Sc at Doon PG College of Agriculture, Science and Technology in Dehradun- at Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir, has raised serious questions over the efficacy of the intelligence network, given the fact that they were unaware of the activities of the student from the sensitive Jammu and Kashmir.
