While the Government aided colleges like DAV and DBS in the State capital are grappling with the problem of large number of applicantions for admission to undergraduate courses, very few students have shown interest for admission in the Government college Raipur. Interestingly the college was setup by the State Government last year to ease student pressure on the colleges of the city.
The Raipur Government college offers Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com). The college has 240 seats in BA while 120 seats are there in B.Com. The college authorities informed that 405 forms were sold for both BA and B.Com courses this year while only 308 forms have been submitted till date. In view of the less submission of forms the college has extended the last date of submission of forms from July 25 to July 30. last year as many as 70 seats in the BA stream remained vacant. In sharp contrast the DAV College which is located less than 10 kms from Raipur Government College, the number of admission seekers is five times the number of available seats. The DAV College sold a record 23530 forms for admissions in 4100 seats available in Undergraduate (UG) courses this year.
Rajneesh Sharma a resident of Raipur road said that the Government college lacks infrastructure and other facilities due to which students do not prefer it. “The college only has three rooms and number of faculty members too is very less, in such a situation how can a college function”, Sharma said.
