Chief Minister Harish Rawat had announced in 2014 that September 9 would be officially observed as Himalaya Day in Uttarakhand. However, nothing has been announced by the State Government in this regard so far which only goes on to show the apathetic attitude of the State Government towards the Himalayas, said HESCO founder Dr Anil Prakash Joshi. He said, “The Himalaya Day is being organised since 2010 without any assistance from the government and will continue to be commemorated by the people. However, apart from announcing its official commemoration in Uttarakhand last year, the CM had also agreed to this in response to the issue being raised in the Vidhan Sabha by the leader of opposition Ajay Bhatt. Nothing has been done or announced by the State Government yet in this regard. This only goes on to show the apathy of the State Government towards the Himalayas. Even after the widespread destruction wreaked by the 2013 disaster, the State Government doesn’t appear to have learnt a lesson from it or for that matter even understood the real issues of this Himalayan State,” he added, commenting on the manner in which various works including roadworks, construction and hydro power generation are being executed in Uttarakhand.
