While spelling out his priority soon after assuming charge as the Senior Superintendent of Police, Pauri district, Jagat Ram Joshi stressed on the role of community policing in checking crimes that have seen a spurt in the district in recent time aside from carrying out all-out development and eradication of social evils with its assistance.
“We would involve the people from all walks of life in it. I am confident that it would prove instrumental in helping police to nip crimes in the bud as we expect to get feedback from the people about the crimes before they happen. Besides, community policing is an imperative to weed out the social evils casting negative impact on the collective life of the people,” he said, adding that the senior citizens would be involved in the drives police would launch for the betterment of the society.
Aside from improving law and order situation, he said he would lay thrust on checking accidents. “Besides, we would launch drives against the dreaded menace of drug addiction. The drug suppliers are being arrested, but we need to bust the racket by nabbing the kingpin,” SSP said.
SSP Joshi who had in his earlier stints worked in Uttarakashi and some other districts said that he had taken a string of initiatives while working in these districts to provide succor to the poor and the physically disabled people.
“While 1,000 blankets were distributed among the poor we organised 13 camps under a programme in course of which 4600 people were benefited. Over 6000 physically handicapped people were provided with wheel- chairs. We distributed spectacles, tricycles and other articles too among the needy. Now in Pauri district too, the same drives would be launched while involving the society in them,” he said.
Joshi also warned that police would clamp down stringently on any attempt to fan communal tension in the district. “The miscreants would be dealt with sternly,” he said. “We would crack down on illicit liquor trade too. If it is found happening in the revenue areas we would take on the menace in consultation with the district magistrate,” he said.
“Accidents must be stopped at any cost. We would sternly deal with drunk driving, reckless driving and overloading. Besides, the traffic system would be streamlined appropriately. Roads would be repaired and potholes would be filled whenever required. Accident prone zones would be identified. All these steps combined would definitely help us bring down the number of mishaps taking toll of human lives,” he said.
Referring specially to the traffic congestion happening in Kotdwar, Srinagar and Pauri towns, he said that he would meet the representatives of the taxi unions, local bodies and administration soon in a bid to find out solution to the recurring problem of traffic pileup in the important towns of the district. “The Char Dham pilgrimage on, we must ensure smooth traffic flow. The pilgrims cross a 21 km stretch on way to the shrines that passes through the district. Besides, the interests of the daily commuters are also uppermost in our mind,” SSP Joshi said.
