The speculations regarding the district hospital of Dehradun were finally laid to rest with the declaration of the Medical Education Minister, Harak Singh Rawat that the associated hospital for the medical college would be built at the place where Niranjanur Mandi is presently located.

The Minister clarified that the Doon Hospital and Doon women hospital would finally return to the health department and would continue to function as district hospitals when the construction activity in the new hospital of Medical college is completed.

Experts too shared positive views about construction of a new hospital. “The Doon hospital and Doon women hospitals are far off from the academic and administrative buildings at Patel Nagar. Further these hospital lack space due to which further expansion plans could be hindered. The Mandi premises at Niranjanpur is perfectly placed in the city and it is big enough for all future expansions,’’ said one a senior doctor of DMC.

The Uttarakhand Government decided to absorb the Doon hospital and Doon Women hospital into the medical college as the MCI norms mandate that a full fledged hospital (with at least 300 beds) should be part of a medical college seeking approval for 150, I year MBBS seats. These two hospitals are now part of the DMC but once the new hospital is constructed these hospitals would regain their original status of district hospitals.
