New chief city health officer warns sanitation staffs against laxity

A day after he assumed charge, the chief city health officer of Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) Dr Kailash Joshi said on Friday that no carelessness regarding the sanitation of the city would be tolerated. “If any sanitation employee is found absent from duty without prior information one day’s salary may be deducted,” he warned.

Notably, heaps of garbage being found scattered across the city, the State High Court while hearing public interest litigation had asked the civic body to clean the city twice a day. “We are determined to keep the city clean in tune with the High Court order,” Joshi said.

Dwelling on the new steps MCD is set to take, Joshi said, “The garbage collection system, especially the ‘door to door garbage collection’, will be managed by the workers in a proper manner.

To improve things, we have fixed the duty hours of the sanitation workers. All the garbage vans will move around the city from 6 am to 9 am. This is the time when the people, especially the working people, are home.

Secondly, any worker found absent from duty without prior permission will have their salary deducted. We are very strict on the sanitation-related matters of the city.”

MCD in total has 77 garbage collection vans of which 47 are working now while the rest is out of service. Queried over it, Joshi said, “Yes. We are aware of the matter. They would be brought on the road after the problems are fixed and some of them would be replaced by new ones,” he said.

Quizzed over the progress of the anti-polythene drive in the city, he said that MCD has printed nearly 50000 informative posters as part of awareness campaign on the matter. Joshi said, “The poster distribution process has just started.

We have asked the entire supervisors in various wards to distribute them among as many houses as possible.”
