To assess the disaster affected areas of Uttarakhand a delegation of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has arrived Dehradun on Tuesday. On Wednesday they would be taken to the areas by the Secretary Disaster Management Bhaskaranand through chopper.

The officials also apprised the team of various difficulties on way to ensure construction of the buildings and bridge in the area.

The cloud burst hit Uttarkashi in August 2012. So terrible was the disaster that several houses hand turned into debris, affecting around 5,000 families. It caused property loss worth hundreds of crores. Heavy rains as a result of cloud burst in the area had washed away the fire station.

Flood has washed away the bridge on Asi Ganga River. At the same time, several buildings had also collapsed in the area. Flash flood caused landslide in the region. All this together resulted into huge debris in the area. Post flood, state government started efforts for clearing the site.  The efforts, however, proved to be little since there was status quo in the area and debris covering long stretch was there.

Flood had also washed away a fire station that is yet to be constructed. “As rainy season is just two months away, there is requirement of starting work on war-footing level to remove the debris from the area so that the area could be ready to face the rains,” an official said.

The team official would visit Uttarkashi district on Wednesday to have an idea of current situation in the area. They would suggest the measures to remove the debris and other works to be carried out on the site.
