A man accused of murdering a woman junior engineer of the Public Works Department in Gopeshwar committed suicide in the jail premises on Tuesday. The incident has raised questions regarding the functioning of the police.
Nitin Kumar, a resident of Jamalpur, Haridwar, had confessed to murdering his old acquaintance- a 22 year old JE in the PWD, after she rejected his marriage proposal on Friday. He had murdered the woman and then gone to his relative's home in Saharanpur from where he was later arrested by the police and sent to Pursari jail, Chamoli district on Monday. According to official sources, he committed suicide in the jail on Tuesday by using a muffler to hang himself. The question being raised here is that if cash reward was announced for the police team that arrested him, then why should action not be taken against police negligence which resulted in the accused committing suicide in judicial custody.
