PNS

The management of Mahant Indiresh Hospital here has decided to treat the rare conjoined twins free of cost. The twins were admitted to the hospital from associated hospital of Doon Medical College (DMC) where they were born recently as their condition deteriorated.

Addressing media persons here on Tuesday the, Senior Pediatrician of the hospital, Dr. Girish Gupta informed that the condition of the twins is still very critical. “Twins are on ventilator and cardiac support. Echo Test, CT scan, Ultrasound, X-Ray and other tests of the twins have been done taking their blood sample. Right now, they are at high-risk, the team of NICU and doctors are doing their best to save their life,’’ he said.

He added that the first priority right now for the doctors is to save the lives of twins and further treatment action plan will be drawn later on.

Pediatric Surgeon of the hospital, Dr Madhukar Maletha said that time is not right to carry out surgery on the twins as their physical formation is extremely complicated. “ conjoined twins have two hearts that are joined, undeveloped four lungs, four kidneys, out of which are three are joined with one another, two back bones, two stomachs and two food pipes.

Considering all these extreme complications, the twins cannot be operated right now,’’ he informed.

The doctors treating the twins said that in view of the poor financial condition of their family and the rarity of this case, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital has decided to treat them free of cost.

Conjoined twins or Siamese twins are identical twins joined at the time of birth. It is an extremely rare phenomenon and occurrence is estimated to range from one in 50000 births to 189000 births.

This type of the condition arises due to some malfunctioning at the time of embryo development.
