Mercury drops a few degrees; chill, rainfall return at high altitude areas of State

Pradeep Bhandari

The weather taking a turn late on Monday evening with snowfall being reported from high altitude mountainous areas, the chill has returned in the mountainous parts of the state. Snowfall in the higher reaches coupled with rainfall in the comparatively lower altitude areas has brought about a considerable drop in the temperature in this region.

The people living in mountainous areas where the weather was warm till a few days ago are now feeling the chill in the air following snowfall. Experts state that the rainfall being experienced in the comparatively lower altitude mountainous areas has come like a boon for the farmers. Farmers in the mountainous parts are tilling their fields for the cultivation of potatoes these days, apart from whom, the horticultural activities are also expected to benefit from the rain.

However, the snowfall has not brought the respite awaited by organisers of national juniors skiing championship at Auli as the snowfall has not deposited snow in quantity adequate for holding the snow-sports competitive event.

The weather here took a turn on Monday late evening with snowfall in high altitude areas coupled with rain in the comparatively lower altitude areas. As a result, the level of mercury has taken a considerable dip causing the people to once again put on the woolen clothing which they had packed away when the days were getting warmer.

The high mountain peaks in this region are once again covered in a blanket of white. The rainfall experienced this time is proving most beneficial to the farmers.

The rainfall is being considered to be good for the wheat, barley and pea crops being grown these days. Talking to The Pioneer, local farmer Pratap Singh says that the rainfall experienced after a dry spell of many days has come as a big relief for the rabi crop which was starting to dry in the farming fields. Similarly, the rain has also come as a major relief for the farmers cultivating potato in the mountainous region.

Till a few days ago, the farmers were facing difficulties in tilling the dry land to sow the potato crop but the recent rainfall has resolved this problem, he added.
