The officials would forge a strategy to attract more farmers into the silk farming that is gradually increasing in the state.

“All participants would analyse production of silk during last five years. We will see what more could do for enhancing the production of silk. Simultaneously, we would seek suggestions from weavers and farmers for increasing the production. Their ideas are very important for us since they are backbone,” sericulture department director Sudhir Mohan Sharma said.

On the basis on suggestions and ideas given by the participants, strategy would be designed. “We would apprise the senior officials of various problems farmers and weavers are facing. Thus we would ask the senior officials to provide solutions to the problems so that the silk production could be enhanced by attracting more farmers in this field,” Sharma said, adding that the target for the next years would also be fixed in the meeting.

He said that during the meet the officials would also focus on the areas where they required paying more attention. “Hopefully, we would do very well during next year. We would take effort to involve more farmers in the areas where the atmosphere was more conducive for the silk farming so that they could reap rich benefit,” Sharma said.

‘Sericulture contributes to environment conservation’

Sericulture is very good for environment. Don’t be surprised since this is a fact. The plants of mulberries on which cocoons grow consume maximum carbon dioxide emitted by different industries and vehicles.

Thus sericulture is contributing in environmental conservation. Uttarakhand sericulture department would propagate the hidden quality of silk farming. The rural youths and farmers would be apprised of the quality.

The department would also try to bring the fact to notice of big farmers in order to enhance production of the silk and environment conservation.

Department is working on a project to highlight the environment conservation quality of sericulture.

Sericulture department director Sudhir Mohan Sharma said, “Silk farming is doubly beneficial. On one hand, it provides employment to large number rural youths, on the other it consumes carbon dioxide thereby keep environment clean. In the areas, where sericulture is in abundance, environment remains cool.” He said that the people should know about this thing. The department would try to apprise the people of the fact.

He further added that sericulture not only provided silk that was used in making clothes but also played important role in keeping the environment clean. Rise in production of silk would ensure double benefits to the state.  He added that all the products related to silk were biodegradable, so sericulture was very good for environment.
