MCI fails to make re-inspection visit in stipulated time to DMC

PNS

Confusion prevails over the status of Doon Medical College (DMC) here with the team of Medical Council of India (MCI) failing to re-inspect the facilities within stipulated period of time. For re-inspection of a previously visited medical college the deadline is April 30 as the apex body prepares the list of the approved colleges and submits them to the Ministry of health by May 15. On the basis of the report of the MCI the letter of Permission (loP) is granted to a college.

With MCI playing truant by not visiting the college, assumptions coupled with rumors are flying thick and fast in the campus of the college. Many are linking it with refusal of the MCI to grant loP this year while others are of the view that the loP would arrive in some days as MCI can accept the written assurances  of a Government medical college and grant permission without re-inspection.

When contacted, the Director Medical Education, Dr Ashutosh Syana brushed aside the rumors, he said that the college has taken necessary steps on the objections of MCI. He said that the department has submitted the list of the objection and the corrective measures taken by it to the MCI.

Dr Syana, who is closely associated with the activities of DMC, sounded confident of getting the all important loP from the apex body of the medical education. He said that the MCI team can still come for re-inspection.

It is worth mentioning here that the team of MCI which had visited the college and associated hospital of DMC on January 5 and 6 had listed a total of 27 shortcomings in facilities and asked the

authorities to get them rectified soon.

Some of the objections of the MCI team were less than required faculty members, congested OPDs and less number of Operation Theaters.

The DMC authorities are claiming that they have rectified all these shortcomings and there is no chance of MCI denying the loP to the college this time.
