In order to raise the revenue of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) officials are planning to collect property tax from government residences as well.

Some of the government institutions already pay service charges to the MCD but no such tax is being charged on government residences so far.

The Dehradun municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey stated that collecting property tax from these government residences will increase the collection of the MCD.

Adding more in this he said, “We presently collect service tax from many of the government institutions like FRI, ONGC and others.

However, no property tax is being collected on the government residential facilities like Officers Transit Hostel, government hostels and politicians’ residences.

We held a meeting with the mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ recently and it was decided that tax will be charged on such government buildings as well."

The municipal commissioner further said, “We have assigned our team to collect all the data of such government buildings.

We will be considering the carpet area of these buildings and the property tax amount will be decided accordingly.

As soon as the data will be collected we will start collection of the tax.

The present property tax collection of MCD is about Rs 20 crore which is likely to rise to Rs 25-27 crore,”said Pandey.
