In the Indian scenario, even with the growing awareness about health and fitness, more than 3 per cent (3 crores) of the Indian population is obese. The first step towards preventing or controlling obesity is to understand what it means and how to identify IJ Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat is accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health. BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of weight in relation to height and is used to define levels of excess weight which help to determine whether bariatric intervention is required.
Dr Ashish Vashistha, Sr Consultant- laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at Max Healthcare said, “Obesity is associated with many health problems including type-2 diabetes, heart attack, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, gout, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, cancer and heart failure.
According to a study published in the noted lancet journal, India is just behind US and China in the global hazard list of top 10 countries with highest number of obese people. Indians exhibit unique features of obesity like excess body fat, abdominal adiposity, increased subcutaneous and intra-abdominal fat, and deposition of fat in ectopic sites such as liver, muscle, and others. Obesity is a major driver for the widely prevalent type-2 diabetes. We aim to spread awareness about the burgeoning incidence of obesity in the region and how small and simple lifestyle changes can do wonders and keep people healthy- which is the first step towards fighting Obesity.”
There are different forms of Bariatric Surgery. Depending on various factors like BMI, eating habits, health problems related to obesity and number of previous stomach surgeries the doctor would recommend the most suitable option to the patient. These are not cosmetic or beautification procedures. The role of the patient becomes critical after the procedure as patients must maintain the commitment to healthy lifestyle and food habits.
