With the five-day Deepawali festivities starting from Friday-the day Dhanteras was observed- the people thronged the important markets in the city in their hordes to buy items like gold and other precious metals deemed auspicious to buy on the occasion.

Mythology says that Goddess lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, who is worshipped on Dhanteras, blesses those who buy metal items on this day.  Even buying some utensils would do for those who cannot afford to go for the precious metals.

In tune with the belief thriving for ages, the people crowed the shops selling jewelry and utensils. Even those selling electronic items, candles, diyas and sweets drew crowds too.

Sushmita, found   at a jewellery shop at Paltan Bazar, said that she had purchased an idol of goddess lakshmi made of gold by way of observing the occasion.

Amit from Raipur said that he had purchased DVD player and solar lamp to mark Dhanteras while Ramesh Uniyal said he had purchased a cooker on the auspicious day.

Anuradha Bisht said that in sync with the belief that one should purchase metal items on this pious occasion, she had purchased a stainless steel glass from Karnapur. “I could not afford more. But such a small piece of buying has gladdened me. I expect that the goddess of wealth would bestow on me her blessing,” she added.
