With an intention to tackle waste management and garbage problems, local students’ activist group Making a Difference by Being the Difference (MAD) identified spots of excessive littering in various parts of the city on Sunday. The group plans to submit a report and discuss suggestions and solutions regarding the same with the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun in a meeting, along with few other civic groups of the city.

After strict directives from the Central Government to improve sanitation and waste management ranking of the city, the civic body has decided to discuss the issue with some of the civil societies of the city so that viable solutions could be derived and formulated. For the same purpose, MAD volunteers identified certain spots in the city which had excessive littering, during their weekly activity on Sunday. The residents also helped by clicking pictures of litter spots in their locality and sharing the same with the group members.

MAD members state that Dehradun, which ranks 316th in the Central Government’s Swachchh Bharat rankings has a lot to do, to fight against garbage mismanagement and improve its position. Group member Jahnavi said that waste dumped in the open must be collected as soon as possible as stray animals later spread out the filth and the radius of litter keeps increasing.

The group also expressed concern over the garbage which is dumped into the Rispana riverbed by the local residents.
