Spending long hours on social networking sites and addiction to internet may snatch away innocence of your child; and the confusion may feed arrogance that may give birth to impulse for committing crime. So, don’t ignore, if you notice any such habits in your child. The alarming situation was revealed by a study of police records.

Police statistics show that in the year 2012, 16 boys were reportedly involved in murder followed by five each involved in rape and kidnapping in Dehradun district alone.

Similarly, cases were registered against 22 boys for their alleged involvement in theft. likewise, 66 boys were booked under relevant sections of IPC for their alleged role in crimes of various natures.

Even three girls were arrested for their reported involvement in theft. Three others were booked under relevant sections of IPC for their alleged involvement in crimes.

Thus, a total of 120 juveniles were arrested for allegedly committing crimes in the year of 2012 in Dehradun

district.

Noticing the grim situation, IPS officer Nilesh Anand Bharne, who presently heads state crime record bureau as superintendent of police, carried out a study of some recent cases of juvenile delinquency which revealed that the juveniles who committed cognizable crime were addicted to internet and porn sites at some point of time. They used to surf internet for hours.

Bharne, who gave tips to hundreds of students to take precaution while using internet, is also worried over alarming rise in instances of juvenile delinquencies.

He accepts that spending long hours on internet is not good since it may lead to some phenomenal changes in the habit of teens.

“Teens should never chat with a stranger as it may lead them into hot water. Chat with the acquaintances and familiar persons only. Always take safety measures while chatting. Don’t disclose your password to anyone,” Bharne said, adding that every coin has two sides and internet is no different.

Bharne takes out time to study psychology of juvenile delinquents to find out the causes those led the young ones to commit crime.

He thoroughly studied several such cases and reached the conclusion that unsupervised surfing of internet is the major cause among others.

“In this era, the role of parents towards children has increased. They need to be extra vigilant on their children. As soon as they notice change, they should immediately intervene to ‘save’ their child. If they feel, they should consult a psychologist for proper counseling of their child,” Bharne advised.
