Local vendors protest over MCD encroachment drive

PNS

Even after repeated protest by vendors affected by the anti-encroachment drive of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) no solutions have come up so far. Expressing anger on not getting any relief from the officials the vendors protested in MCD on Monday.

About 50 vendors gathered and raised slogans seeking the chance to pursue their sole means of livelihood.

Interacting with the media during the protest local vendor Gauri Devi said, “Officials took our materials a day ago which is why we are holding this protest. We know of the drive conducted by the MCD to remove encroachment but this is the only source of our income.

We do not have carts or vehicles we sit near the road once a week and other days we move from one place to another.

We have been meeting various officials for a year now, seeking a solution to the problem.”Another local vendor Jyoti Kumar said, “We are tired of protesting repeatedly. If officials from the MCD will not help us we will hold our protest at district magistrate SA Murugesan’s office.

We only want that a specific area be provided for us.”It is pertinent to mention here that MCD has only been able to shift 300 vendors of the Sunday market to a new location so far. However, a large proportion of such vendors who set stalls on Sunday still exists in the city.
