live-in-relationships, which appear to be becoming popular among youths these days, are proving to be unsuccessful in Dehradun.
This is revealed by the data from the women's helpline of the Doon Police.
According to sub-inspector Deepika Rana, in-charge of Women Helpline, live-in relationship is not that successful here as many couples are regularly visiting women helpline with complaints of adjustment problems and recurring disputes.
Compared to last year's data, the cases have increased by around 10 per cent this year. “I have counselled around 20-30 such couples so far since January, which is quite more than last year.
Many cases were resolved and many were sent to the court,” said Rana.
She added that in most of the live-in-relationship cases the male partner disagrees to marriage after first promising to make his female partner his life partner.
She said that in some cases even the females end the relationship as they find the
male partners not matching their criteria after living being in a live-in-relationship for some time.
According to Rana, repeat complaints were also registered by many couples in many cases, who were happily married after a pre-counseling session at women helpline earlier.
They lodged complaints of domestic violence and disputes between them.
Revealing few of her counseled cases Rana said that,
in one case Shweta (name changed), who was in a live-in-relationship with her boyfriend Deepak (name changed) for about one and half years and later was also married to him came with a complaint of regular domestic violence. later, she refused to stay with him as she was regularly beaten up by her husband.
In another case, Pooja (name changed) who was in a live-in relationship with Mayank (name changed) found her partner to be involved in another love affair with a girl and she registered her complaint in women's helpline.
They both used to have regular arguments on this issue and finally Mayank decided to move on. As per Rana, today’s youth lack the basic qualities necessary for long term relationships and as a result they are facing such disputes.
