The males of Uttarakhand have got higher chances of knee joint related problems as compared to their counterparts living in plain areas. The experts attributed this difference on life style and mountainous terrain which exerts pressure on knees.

This information was shared by senior orthopaedic surgeon and joint replacement expert Dr Gaurav Gupta while addressing newsmen here on Thursday. He said that he has experience of working both in Delhi and Dehradun and it has come it his notice that knee related problems are more common in Uttarakhand. Dr Gupta said that large number of people from the state serve in armed forces. This coupled with the fact that mountainous terrain exerts more pressure on knees ensure that the number of knee joint cases are higher here, he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that Dr Gupta has done large number of joint replacement surgeries and has introduced ‘Orthopilot’, a computer Assisted Navigation techniques for various types of Joint Deformities.

“Minimal Invasive Computer Navigated Knee Replacement Surgery allows the surgeon to make more accurate cuts and to place the artificial knee implant, with its critical angles, much more accurately and virtually eliminates alignment errors. There is minimal blood loss and there is no scar unlike as traditional replacement surgery. The entire surgical process can be followed on the screen”, he said.

Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon, Queens hospital, london, United Kingdom, Dr Sean Masterson was also present on the occasion. He said that with the advent of advanced technology in knee replacement surgery coupled with expert surgical skills has turned out to be a boon to patients suffering with chronic arthritis.

Dr Masterson said that the advantage of ‘OrthoPilot Computer Assisted Navigation’ technology is accuracy during surgery, storing surgery database to ensure patient satisfaction and gives the benefit of comfort and flexibility to the patient with the increase in longer life of the Knee Implant.
