Kotdwar rail bridge damaged, Char Dham routes blocked in rain

PNS

Incessant rainfall during the past 36 hours in the Garhwal region has affected the Char Dham Yatra vehicular traffic apart from the link routes under the Public Works Department’s purview also being reported blocked due to landslides.

The rail traffic with Kotdwar has been down for the past three days after a pillar of the railway bridge across Sukharo river in Kotdwar sank lower. The downpour has also raised the water level in rivers Alaknanda, Mandakini and Bhagirathi apart from the Nayar river  in Pauri district and various mountain streams. However, the level of water in these rivers was reported a few units below the danger level on Sunday.

The rainy days have caused landslides and other problems in different parts of the Garhwal region disrupting routine life.

The Pauri-Dhumakot-Ramnagar State highway in Pauri district was blocked due to landslide debris and heavy boulders on Sunday morning.

The authorities expect that it may even take more than one week to clear the road in the coming days with the dimensions of the boulder requiring use of explosives to enable clearing.

Meanwhile, according to information provided by the Pauri district disaster control room a total of 47 roads were reported blocked due to landslides in Pauri district as on Sunday.

Reliable sources state that though the nodal agency is working consistently to clear the network of roads for traffic but their efforts and vehicular traffic are being hampered due to frequent mudslides and landslides along the Char Dham yatra circuit and link routes.
